In March we were proud to collaborate with historic Maltsters, Muntons to produce a wonderful bock - now available on our webshop. It is incredible to work closely with our suppliers and this is an account of that collaboration: with comments from Joe Fifield (Malt Sales Manager) and Fabian Clark (Munton’s Senior Product Development Technologist).
The Beer
“The team at Muntons were super excited to collaborate with Anspach and Hobday on this project not only because they brew some amazing beers but they’re also a great bunch to work with.
The conversation about a collab brew started a back in 2019 but it was put on hold during the A&H brewery move and then we were plunged in to numerous lockdowns. Then the stars finally aligned and we (Joe Fifield and Fabian Clark) made the trip from Suffolk down to Croydon for the long awaited brew day.
The decision was made to brew a malt-forward Bock with the idea to showcase all British ingredients with a German twist as a nod to Fabians training at Paulanar Brewery in Munich.
We decided on a grist bill of Muntons Super Pale, Brown, Amber and Dextrin. We chose the ‘Super Pale’ for the base malt as its subtle characteristics works perfectly to elevate the amazing flavour and colour of the Brown and Amber Malts, both of which give a nice dry finish.
All in all it was an awesome day at A&H and The Bock turned out phenomenally good… If we don’t say so ourselves!”
Why working with producers is so important
We love working with our producers here at A&H. Having them in for a brew day presents a fantastic opportunity to not only learn more about their product, but to understand their history, heritage and why they do what they do. We want to make sure all of our collaborations are executed well and knowing their story and drawing on that knowledge and expertise plays an important part in getting it right.
The Brand
With an eye on the past we looked to Muntons’ heritage to come up with our label. In true A&H Style, taking inspiration from an original photograph and building in the modern brand of today.
This culminated in one of our most communicative and easily recognisable labels of the can era. A fitting tribute to malted barley, which truly makes our beer.
A Collab Delivered
We were honoured to join Muntons pouring the beer at their stand at SIBA’s brewers convention - BEERX. Look at Joe go! The Bock is available on our webshop here.
