This week we launched a very special and incredibly tasty collaboration. We are proud to announce the arrival of the Sea Salt & Lime Gose brewed with Maldon Salt.
The iconic brand of Maldon Salt is an incredible 140 years old and, as part of their celebrations, they sought out prime producers who use their prize ingredient and we were delighted to be approached as their brewer of choice.
The team at Maldon challenged us to come up with a fresh and fruity recipe that would appeal to the eclectic audience who enjoy Maldon salt. Challenge accepted.
Given the time of year (and factoring in the probable heat wave) we decided keeping things citrus and sour would be a good starting point. We’ve commonly brewed the German style Gose in the past and it didn’t take a wave of ingenuity to consider that a Lime and Salt Gose could do the trick.
About The Gose Style
The Gose style: Gose is a sour, ale-fermented beer that originated in Goslar, Germany. It is usually brewed with a mix of wheat and barley. In traditional Gose, typical flavours include lemon & citrus sourness, coriander and herbal aromatics, and of course, saltiness.
For more on this fantastic style see here.
Concepts are easy to come up with and it is here that the team at A&H have earned their salt. Putting all of their experience together I have to say the brewing team have really delivered.
Taking the learnings of the last few years, we used lime zest and lime juice towards the end of fermentation, producing a high acidity with the beautiful flavour of lime brought to the fore by Maldon’s salt. Fermented with Philly Sour yeast, this brilliant dual purpose yeast produces a fantastic soft sour during fermentation eliminating the need for kettle sour and delivering a wonderful balance.
The Sea Salt & Lime Gose may be our best sour yet, and we are absolutely delighted to have been a part of Maldon’s big achievement.
The Sea Salt & Lime Gose is available on the Anspach & Hobday webshop. You can grab yours using the button below.
Check out Maldon’s Salt Stories for film on the making of this beer too.
I hope you enjoy it as much as we did making it.
